we shredded our credit cards!

February 6, 2008

Since this is the first blog, let me explain myself.

I’m blogging to stay organized… that’s one of the reasons I thought debt was not an option for me… because I am organized. I’m 30 years old, make decent money, and have nothing to show for it. Actually, that’s not true. I have all the crap I bought on credit to show for it.

Last month my husband and I shredded our credit cards. It was a grand and empowering moment (for me, at least). What I didn’t think of was that our spending was more than our income, and after bills, we really didn’t have any extra cash! I’m talking less than $100 for two weeks of gas and food. Hey, but the bills were paid on time right?! I had a moment of weakness, which I like to think was a necessity, this week. I paid the mortgage and was concerned that our weekend spending would put us in the negative if the mortgage check cleared. I was right. I had to deposit a 0% interest credit card check into our account. I really don’t think this was a good idea, but our only other option was hope it doesn’t clear before I get paid.

My husband doesn’t understand why there is no money. He’s the one that would pay bills late so he would have some spending money. This was before I took over our finances. This was when we were responsible for only ourselves. This is a point of argument for us. He spends money that’s not there, and then I get upset. Then he complains that I should keep him in the know and gets mad because we should have plenty of money to spend at will. We would if we didn’t have debt. I really can’t wait for that day!
